Crisfield MD Mennonite Disaster Service Trip

November 20, 2022

This week's article gives a brief glimpse of the work done by our group of volunteers in Crisfield MD from October 30 through November 7. Thank you for your willingness to show God's love by being the hands and feet of Jesus.

On October 29, 2021, a combination of high tide, full moon, and windy conditions brought yet another significant flooding event along the eastern shores of Maryland in Somerset and Dorchester Counties. It impacted the Crisfield and Cambridge areas of the State. According to some local people in Crisfield, this event was even more damaging than Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Eleven people were involved in an MDS work week to Crisfield, Maryland which is on the western side of the eastern shore of Maryland next to the Chesapeake Bay. Ten people were from Neffsville and two young ladies were from Weaverland Church. We worked on three houses that MDS built; painting, drywalling, doing wood trim work, floor laying, and some kitchen counter work. All the houses were within several blocks of each other.

Our day on the job started at 8 am and lasted until 4 pm. Most of us were in bed by 9:30 pm. We did have a fun time learning to know each other better. We also were fed very well at breakfast and supper. I recommend going on an MDS trip if you ever have the opportunity to do so.

Those who served on this trip included Nelson and Barb Dagen, Bob Unruh, Jay Peifer, John Bomberger, Clair Sauder, Bob Bear, Dave and Jewel Leaman, and Lowell Jantzi. Here are a few pictures.

An Additional Note:

While this group was in Crisfield MD, Stu and Starla Landis were serving with MDS in Paradise CA, helping to rebuild homes destroyed in the Paradise Fire of 2018. Thank you, Stu and Starla!
